Rustoleum Paint Job RPJ Gold Course Update! Your Thoughts Please…

Hi Tony,
Since I have the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint course I knew how to prep my car before I painted it. The only things I wish I did know before painting it was at what temperature to paint the car and dry time and cure time. Because I painted the car in the driveway and it was sunny and a small breeze that day and the paint dried as soon as it hit the car, it didn’t have time to flow out and then dry. So the car looked like it was meant to be flat black paint. This luckily could be wet sanded and buffed out 🙂 I painted it with Hammerite High Gloss Black which is the only paint that I could find locally that is similar to Rustoleum.

Okay the reason I want to spray me some rustoleum is so that I could offer to paint cars for really cheap. But I would want to paint in a booth that costs 200 dollars for one full day. So I’m wondering if I can be in and out of there in like 5 hours and drive for 45 minutes back to my place with no problems. Does that mean I have to use something other than mineral spirits? And should I use rustoleum clear coat or something else that’s still cheap?

Hm, maybe all the masking techniques? I feel that I keep getting paint on my trims and how in depth to get the guns setting correctly because I can never get it right even though I watch many videos on how to.

Hey Toni, I’m excited about this course, the cost of automotive paint is holding me back. With the RPJ formula I can afford it and get alot of practice with it. When I’m comfortable and experienced with spraying, I’ll use the more expensive automotive paints to paint my car. You’ve got the best course and saved me alot of money on DVD’s and books! hey tony! just wondering whats the best primer to use with the paint the same one from rustoleum?? and do i have to sand down the primer a bit before trowing the actual paint??

I want to know about that secret blend. the stuff I paint doesn’t reqiure expensive paint.

Have an 86 GMC Diablo, found rustoleum spray can paint that matches the color exactly. Going to try two coats on the hood then see if it will color sand, or buff out? I primered it first, that turned out pretty well. But the color paint is streaked which seems typical of spray can paint. Any suggestions? Or should I stop??

Hi Tony, what is the secret rustolium pain mix as I going to paint my motorhome. I will more than likly be painting it with the roller as I dont have the room to put the motorhome indoors. So this will be painted outside, I may be able to paint it with a spray gun but due to rain and wind I think most of the paint would not go onto van and just get blown away. I was wondering about the correct prep methods, need to primer, correct primer, the grit to prep the body. Also if thinning is needed do you use acetone? Best solvent for cleaning the gun.

Tony, About a month ago, I painted my brothers boat. He did not want to spend a bunch so we went with the Rustoleum white. I wanted to know how much to thin it down so I could use my HVLP gun. I went 60/40. It went on very good, but did not seem to grab the primer very well. It did not feel as hard as using automotive paint. What could I do differently on my next Rustoleum job? I have two more boat projects coming…

Interested in prep and paint blend – I’m in the middle of a body off restoration of a Buick GN and I want it to be black satin type finish. Keep up the good work, I have learned a bunch here.

Here goes a list of questions:

1) My car is currently a badly painted red. I wish to paint the car white but was told that I must first remove the red or else there will eventually be bleed through creating a weird pink. Is this true?

2) Do I need a special compressor if I use a HVLP gun or will any compressor do?

3) Can I use your special Rustoleum formula if I choose to roll my car?

4) The top of my car is a painted fiberglass. Do I need to do anything special to repaint this?

what is the right mixture of mineral spirits to paint in the formula to spray paint with a paint gun??? what type paint gun??? what nozzle size on gun and what psi??? how many coats for complete coverage?? do you wet sand between coats??? or clear coat when done???

Great news. I’m in the process of rolling on Dulux paint on my Mitsubishi Mirage. Will the secret blend also apply to Dulux enamel paints.

Hey man I love the site. I love the 50 dollar paint job in every way. I actually sprayed my car gloss black with O.K. results. The only thing I don’t like is that there are limited colors and people can tell that its a cheap paint job. Have you experimented with mixing any colors up? I saw that you can put metallic flake in a urethane clear coat? Where did you get the clear coat? I really would love to paint my car gold or dark purple. I imagine that a true gold color would be near impossible to mix up with enamel paints though. Thank you!!!

want to paint a wide satin or flat stripe on the hood of a silver car. how do I prep and what paint should I use? Thanks

How about hardener. Also spraying with laquer thinner to get it to dry quickly. Around 50 -60 a gallon for colors.

HEy I tried to do my car black and purple mix and a roller. It started off looking ok on the first couple of coats but by the end I had a huge problem with the hair from the roller brush sticking on the car. Now my car looks like I was going for an alligator skin look. lol.. I decided I was going to give it one more try..maybe with a spray gun this time. Is this neccessary or is there something I’m not doing right ? And is there any other advice you can give to make it look more like a factory paint job because mine looks like crap!!! PLEASE HELP …lol

how many of these questions do i have to read before you actually answer one fully?

I’m going to roll on black rustoleum on the roof of my clk 320 silver Mercedes, i live in Michigan so its cold, i will be painting in the garage with very little heat; so will i be OK and can I roll on a clear coat or use clear coat in a spray can; can I then wet sand and buff and polish.

I am an old hot-rodder (58!) and have a BLAND Alpine White Rodeo that I want to paint flames on. The car’s paint is perfect, so do I tape my flames off first, then do prep? Would you roll the base flame color on then use spray to blend? I painted my horse trailer without near the prep needed for a car, but after 3 years, it still looks new! But my Rodeo makes me look like a stooopid Soccer Mom! That I am NOT!
What’s your advice? (I am an artist, so taping flames free-hand is no biggie – except I cannot remember what tape to use – painter’s? or ?)

Hey Tony, I’m thinking about painting work truck using Rustoleum Flat Black. Since it is a work truck im not planning on smoothing out the little dings it has, just flat out paint it. The original paint is already burnt, and faded by this hot west Texas sun. After sanding, can I skip the primer and head straight to the paint? Whats better, mineral spirits or acetone? 1:1 Ratio is what I have read on other sites, is that about right? What PSI should I spray at?

I would like to paint a van w/rustoleum paint. I would like to use a sponge cigar roller, would I get a nice finish? Also what are your recommendations on
preparing the surfice. Limited work area for spraying, worried about over spray on
the neighbors. If I do spray can I purchase a cheap canister sprayer from Harbor
Frieght. Will that do a good enough job?

Hey, I have been reading and researching your websites as well as other information on painting cars. I have done some refurbishing and painting with things like my daughters Radio Flyer wagon (Bubblegum Pink now), but have never done anything on a car. I have a solid white 1990 300zx in good condition with 2 small (dime-sized) rust spots on the rear quarter panel that I want to repair. Planning on sanding, using a self-etching primer, body filler, and using spray can rustoleum base and clear coat with wet sanding after clear coat. Am I on the right track here? Also, since my interior is burgundy red, I think that my only color choices in the future that flow with that color are white, black, or some shade of grey. Any thoughts if I want to go with a flat-charcoal? Thanks!

hey tony, im planning on painting my lacrosse helmet cage with the rustoleum metallic gold titanium spray paint. the cage is chrome titanium right now, i was wondering if i have to put some kind of primer on before the rustoluem spray? or just go right with the spray. Thanks

Took a brief glance so far and watched a few vids you’ve published.. I have an 88 Ninja i’ve completely stripped down to frame.

I have bare metal as everything paintable has a sandblasted (silica) finish. Luckily I haven’t had any flash rust yet (sandblasted 4 days ago) basement stored/ low humidity.

I am curious how durable rustoleum oil based gloss would be on my frame/swingarm/kick stands???

I have already bought my PPG (OMNI) Ford SVT Electric Blue Base coat + Clear Coat + Hardener + Reducer materials for the fairing/tank misc. MH168,MC260,

I’m going for the Epoxy 2k Primer tonight..

Should I just pick up black base coat and shoot that or is the Rustoleum gallon of gloss black (oil base) i have, a good option for the frame..

I messed up and got rustoleum high performance protective enamel. How can I paint over this for outdoor metal items? Please help

The Rust-Oleum available at my Lowe’s is not the same as you have in your course. The one in your video says “Protective Enamel”, while the one I got says “High Performance Protective Enamel” and is also labeled as Professional and oil base. Your can is white while mine is gray. Your thin yours with mineral spirits while mine says to thin with acetone only. Mine says, “enhanced formula for superior coverage and durability”. Am I still good to use the one I bought? Do I need to thin with mineral spirits or acetone?

What is the blend that you keep saying about is there really a formula that you created? Like is there a mixing ration and clear preference? Please explain need help
